A 117-meter breach in the eastern embankment of the Jialu River in Chuanhui district, Zhoukou, Henan province, was successfully sealed on Saturday evening, according to a CCTV News report. Emergency response teams had worked around the clock to control flooding.
The breach occurred at around 11 pm on Thursday under the combined impact of sustained upstream inflows from the Jialu River and backwater from the Shaying River. Initially about 30 meters wide, the breach gradually expanded to 117 meters as a result of strong currents, posing a serious threat to the embankment's flood-control capacity.
Crews are continuing work on raising and reinforcing the embankment as well as seepage-control.
