Downtown Zhengzhou expands to 796.70 sq km, ranks among top cities

According to the notice issuedby the People's Government of Zhengzhou Municipality on October 11, the urban built-uparea in downtown Zhengzhou reached 796.70 square kilometersin 2023, an expansionof 22.38 square kilometers compared to 2022. The total urban built-up area has grown to1,412.22 square kilometers, an increaseof 27.71 square kilometers from the previous year.

"As urbanizationaccelerates, Zhengzhou expandsyearby year," said Song Xiangqing, vicepresident of the Commerce Economy Association of China. According to him, suchexpansion is the outcome ofresource convergence, population concentration, and economic growth. Song also noted thata larger city size signifies an enhancedcapacity for resource integration, population accommodation, and enhanced urban attractiveness and influence.

A series of impressive data highlights that Zhengzhou, as a nationalmetropolis, has ascended toa new level in itsmodernizationefforts. By the end of 2023, the urban built-uparea in downtownZhengzhou has expanded to rank among the top 15 major cities in China. The city's permanent population reached 13.08 million, and its GDP exceeded 1.36 trillion yuan. In the first half of 2024, Zhengzhou recorded a regional GDP of 725.24 billion yuan, representing23% of Henan's total economic output. Withits steady economic growth, Zhengzhou continues to lead Henan's overall development.
