May 22 each year marks the International Day for Biological Diversity and the theme for this year is From Agreement to Action: Build Back Biodiversity. As one of China's most biologically diversified provinces, Henan has made remarkable progress in biodiversity conservation.

Henan is home to 3,979 higher plant species, including 3 wild plant species under first-class state protection and 24 under second-class state protection. According to the second national terrestrial wild animal survey, the number of terrestrial vertebrate species across Henan has increased from 520 to 560 over the past 10 years. The number of rare and endangered wild animals and plants, including Baer's pochards, Chinese merganser ducks and crested ibis, has been on the rise thanks to the province's strengthened protection.

By the end of 2021, Henan has established 345 nature protected areas of various types, including 30 nature reserves, 132 forest parks, 116 wetland parks, 32 geoparks and 35 scenic spots, which has brought 95 percent of the province's key state-protected wildlife species and 80 percent of its ecosystem types under effective protection.

This year, Henan will promote the development of green cities, forest cities and waste-free cities, and strive to create more green communities. It is worth noting that Henan will carry out ecological protection and restoration projects in the eastern Qinling Mountains and other key areas, continue to protect wetlands and control soil erosion, and make comprehensive use of sediment resources in the main stream and tributaries of the Yellow River.
