The traditional Chinese solar calendar divides ayear into 24 solar terms. Autumn Equinox (Chinese: 秋分), the 16th solar term, begins this year on Sept 23. Starting this day, most parts of China will enter the season of autumn harvest, ploughing and sowing.

In 2018, Autumn Equinox took on a new role as the Chinese Farmers' Harvest Festival, China's first official festival set up specially for farmers at the national level. September 23 this year marks the 5th Chinese Farmers' Harvest Festival. On this day, various activities will be held across China to pay tribute to farmers and celebrate harvest.
