Henan's Wheat Breeding Expert Xu Weigang Named New CAE Academician

The Chinese Academy of Engineering announced its new academicians on November 18, including Xu Weigang, a researcher at the Academy of Agricultural Sciences of Henan Province, said a source from the Association for Science and Technology of Henan Province.

Up to now, Henan has embraced 25 academicians (6 of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and 19 of the Chinese Academy of Engineering) covering more than 10 fields, such as electronic information, energy and mining, civil and hydraulic engineering, agriculture, pharmaceutical and health care, chemistry, physics, etc.

Xu Weigang, one of the leaders in wheat breeding in China, has been working on wheat genetics and breeding for over 30 years and made great contributions to China's wheat production and breeding. He bred Zhengmai 9023, a high-quality strong-gluten wheat variety with the largest cultivated area for 6 consecutive years in China. With an annual maximum cultivated area of 29.8 million mu (1 mu equals to 0.067 hectares), a total of 250 million mu has been grown till now in China. Currently, China has more than 10 million mu of such a wheat variety playing a significant role in enhancing the quality of wheat in China's market.
